Fargate

All the length of Fargate
The rainy wind squalling
Sellers of Big Issue
In the doorways of the shops

Swish swish passing cars
Early evening falling
Hum and clang of passing tram
Speeding homeward no-one stops

Shoppers in the big emporia
Hasting homeward up the Moor
Cannot fail to see the sellers
Business there is none

No-one stops to buy Big Issue
No-one wants to know the poor
Paper sellers can't be pushy
Police would move them on

Drab the tram queues wait to go
Places we don't know about
Herdings Halfway Middlewood
Outskirts of the town

Homeless in the half-light
Paper sellers calling out
All the length of Fargate
Where the rain is siling down
