North Line

Vauxhall, Duddeston
Aston, Gravelly Hill
On the north line out of New Street
Station names that linger still

Vastness of the city
All greyness reared above
Silence of the strangers
Thoughts of those I love

Away from boring duty
Are village, vale and hill
But Erdington and Wylde Green
Sutton Coldfield held me still

Hawthorn trees in blossom
Spring had crept unseen
At Four Oaks, Butlers Lane and Blake Street
Hedgerows in between

And though only for a morning
Transformed by nature's wand
Life shone in glory over Shenstone
Lichfield City and beyond
