Bad Day

My hands are cold the meagre sun is low
late summer flowers scarcely cheer the room
the rain no longer hammers on my roof
but wet trees drip their burden over all

Their labour done the Portuguese now go
home from the brasserie across the road
a single tractor drones among the vines
and then is silent to let darkness fall
