Last Train

We regret
to inform passengers that the
twenty forty-five
train for
Meadowhall
has terminated at
Doncaster
.......

And we regret
the ever-slanting rain
bouncing with abandon on
platform pavement steps bridge
bench and bin
across the greasy tracks

As we regret
the trains which do not stop
palaces of light
and sound just as in our life
have run the other way
and we cannot connect

We regret
the empty platforms
nearing darkness where dim lights
do not reflect
