Half Empty

Weather seasonal though all the signs
have not been good
nonetheless a large blue sky
not much of breeze or black and I
have shaken off my cold
so merited my Danish pastries from the store

As I emerge the spring is in my smile
at having once again survived the freeze
And my heart is full of joy.

I step out brightly to my car
when this old couple-
hunched and drab of dress inch by
down the slope she has a stick
and he supports but barely stronger
full of tender care.

Zephyr barely rising her twisted progress folds
thin legs halted by a gentle breeze
And my heart is full of sorrow.
