Incident

It was when his teeth fell out
I knew that he was going
I'd seen him slither down the car
And lie unmoving in the way of traffic
But none stopped
Two passers-by had lifted him
It helped him on his way I thought
I caught a hissing groan as he
Went sideways in the rain
I never knew his name
He's not been well
He's had two turns today she said
So calm as if she thought it had to come
Or nothing's wrong
It seemed eternity
She stood dry-eyed until
They carted him on board
And kept the blue light flashing
Down the carriageway
A sign I thought only of respect
