Clerk of Works

Never tried to walk on water-
walked on wet tarmac now and then
when steaming in the afternoon
and late before the siren men
were eyeing home or bar and soon

unverified by check or
clerk of works inspection made
that would be when the backfill's
second-grade performance showed
the secret nurtured by the pikeys of the road

Only Christ could walk on water
so we're told - but then
it could be said that
those to die before they're old
can drown in shallows where they tread
